Mr. Cates is recognized for a notable career in security and law enforcement, marked by more than a decade of dedicated service. Most recently, he served as a lead instructor for the U.S. Air Force, in charge of training security forces at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, from 2020 to 2024. In this capacity, Mr. Cates collaborated with other trainers and was responsible for instructing large classes of federal students and overseeing a comprehensive range of training programs, which included nearly 290 hours of federal bylaw training, as well as base-specific training that incorporated unique aspects related to space. He also assembled security details for international summits and oversaw the protection of high-net-worth clients and embassy facilities. Mr. Cates’s leadership extended to supervising security operations and providing comprehensive security for both aircraft and personnel.
Mr. Cates attained the rank of staff sergeant, achieving E5 status before his retirement. Earlier, he served as a presidential security supervisor at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland with the U.S. Air Force, beginning in 2014. In this role, Mr. Cates was entrusted with safeguarding senior government officials and coordinating critical security measures during high-level events. His responsibilities included supervising teams tasked with protecting dignitaries and ensuring the integrity of sensitive operations.
Earlier in his military career, Mr. Cates was an area supervisor for the U.S. Air Force in the U.K. from 2011 to 2014. During this period, he managed daily security operations across multiple installations and played a pivotal role in international collaborations. A defining moment occurred while stationed at Milton Hall, England, when Mr. Cates responded to a medical emergency involving a British national experiencing a heart attack near the main gate. Demonstrating composure under pressure, he assisted the individual alongside Ministry of Defense police officers by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation until emergency services arrived from Royal Air Force Lakenheath. The man’s life was saved due to their swift actions, and Mr. Cates continued to monitor his recovery.
Notably, during his tenure in the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Cates had the opportunity to work with local law enforcement, coordinating with them to conduct active shooter drills in collaboration with three local schools, highlighting the importance of such training in the country. In the latter part of his career, he taught approximately 500 students each year, with some variation in numbers.
Apart from his military career, Mr. Cates served as an operations manager at Colorado Security Agency in Washington, D.C., from 2018 to 2019. There, he managed complex security operations, drawing on his extensive background to ensure the safety of clients and assets in a high-profile urban environment.

Among numerous achievements, Mr. Cates provided security for Michelle Obama during the 2012 Olympic Games, a role that set the stage for subsequent leadership opportunities. His commitment and valor have been recognized through several prestigious awards, including a Life-Saving Medal in 2011, an Air and Space Achievement for Meritorious Service in 2017, and a Humanitarian Service Medal for COVID Service from the U.S. Air Force in 2020.
Mr. Cates attributes his professional success to grit and resiliency developed through overcoming personal challenges during childhood and throughout his military service. His eighth-grade teacher, who battled breast cancer while continuing to mentor him even during overseas deployments, was a significant influence on his life and career trajectory.
After retiring from active duty, Mr. Cates settled in Tennessee with his family, where he is now considering future opportunities in law enforcement or supervisory roles where he can leverage his extensive skills in supervision, management and crisis response developed throughout his distinguished career in military service and security operations. Drawing constant inspiration from his wife, Kayla, a retired military security forces officer, Mr. Cates is eager for future endeavors.
