Michael D. Grogan, Deputy Sheriff at San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Military for dedication, achievements, and leadership in law enforcement.

With more than 40 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Grogan has found much success in law enforcement and military service, cementing himself as an expert in criminal investigations. His career began in 1980 as a level I reserve police officer in the town of Los Gatos, California. This initial role laid the foundation for his lifelong commitment to public safety.

Between 1982 and 2012, Mr. Grogan excelled with the Millbrae City Police Department in the city of Millbrae, California, advancing to the position of captain over the course of his three-decade tenure. During this time, he also held the role of special agent with the U.S. Coast Guard from 1997 to 2004. Notably, Mr. Grogan was distinguished as one of the first sea marshals after the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

In 2004, Mr. Grogan transitioned to the Department of the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division as a special agent, a position he held until his retirement in 2019. His stellar military service is marked by numerous commendations, including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. His dedication to his country resulted in his travels to Afghanistan and Iraq, where he served with distinction. Since 2012, Mr. Grogan has excelled a deputy sheriff with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, where he continues to investigate various criminal cases.

To support his professional ambitions, Mr. Grogan pursued a formal education has been instrumental in his achievements. He initially earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Saint Mary’s College of California in 1991. Furthering his expertise in law enforcement leadership, he graduated with diplomas at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia in 2000 and at the LAPD West Point Leadership Academy in 2003. Additionally, Mr. Grogan holds multiple certifications from the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training in California.

Throughout his stellar career, Mr. Grogan has been involved in various professional organizations such as Elk Lodge 1112, his local chapter of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, as well as the Peninsula Police Officers’ Association. His commitment to community service is evident through his presidency of the Millbrae Police Activities League from 1993 to 2007. Mr. Grogan has also received numerous accolades that underscore his exemplary efforts.

As an author, Mr. Grogan published “Grogan’s Story: 40 Years a Cop and Soldier” in 2022, sharing insights from his extensive law enforcement and military experiences. He also contributes to a podcast titled “The Overwatch Collective,” further extending his influence and knowledge within the field.

In his personal life, Mr. Grogan attributes much of his success to his passion for police work and the influence of his father, Richard Grogan, and his mentor Ed Maghakian. Married to his loving wife, Donna, for nearly four decades, he takes pride in their enduring partnership and their two wonderful sons: Jeffrey, a police officer, and Gregory, a fire captain.

Looking toward the future, Mr. Grogan plans to retire as a deputy sheriff and hopes to write a book about first responders while engaging with his son’s nonprofit organization. An avid swimmer, he aims to be remembered as a dedicated public servant who made significant contributions to public safety and the betterment of the country.
