Kavika Duff, retired senior health care sergeant in the United States Army, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Military for dedication, achievements, and leadership in military health care.
Born to a military contractor in the Marshall Islands, Mr. Duff spent his childhood traveling between Micronesia, Hawaii and California. As soon as he graduated from high school, he joined the U.S. Army, enlisting as a health care specialist in 1998. Mr. Duff served as a medic for his first 12 years in the military, supporting infantry across the world During this time, he provided telemedical services both in combat and in garrison.
Following his initial enlistment, Mr. Duff took on the role of trainer at the National Training Center in 2010. His responsibilities included preparing incoming military personnel for overseas deployment. Subsequently, Mr. Duff shifted to the Department of Combat and Doctrine Development, where he worked in the Lessons Learned department. After completing a medical officer planning course, he was assigned to Germany, where he accepted the position of first sergeant. During his tenure in Germany, Mr. Duff oversaw planning and staffing duties. In particular, he oversaw area support for a medical company handling emergency response teams that supported hundreds of thousands of troops across Europe and Africa.
Throughout his military career, Mr. Duff built a reputation of respectful leadership, with a notable capacity for team-building in complex scenarios. Though rarely volunteering for management positions, he was always ready and willing to step up when leadership was needed. This positive approach was recognized by Mr. Duff’s superiors, who regularly sought his insight and requested his help in management roles. He also expressed a willingness to take on difficult assignments, including those requiring relocation, even when turning them down may have been easier. Mr. Duff also saw direct combat situations, serving for two years in Iraq.
Mr. Duff retired from the U.S. Army as a senior health care sergeant in 2019, but he has stayed active in the world of civic duty. He places a priority on volunteering and helping veterans, especially those stationed overseas. After retiring and returning to Micronesia, Mr. Duff played a key part of that region’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He helped establish a quarantine center that helped keep a population of over 30,000 people safe, as well as developing a repatriation plan. Despite having limited resources, Mr. Duff found his work during COVID-19 to be extremely rewarding. He is driven by a commitment to improving the lives of others, especially women, children and retirees.
Noted for his achievements during his time in the U.S. Army, Mr. Duff has been recognized with a number of accolades. He was awarded with the Bronze Star and an Honor Commendation Medal in recognition of his military service. Mr. Duff credits his success to his strong faith, his desire to support his community, and the support of his friends and family. He maintains active membership in the U.S. Veterans of Pohnpei Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) organization.
Beyond his military service and professional life, Mr. Duff is a loving husband and a devoted father to four children. In his free time, he enjoys diving, hiking and reading books. Since retiring from the U.S. Army, Mr. Duff has been pursuing a bachelor’s degree in emergency and disaster management from American Military University. He aims to complete this degree in 2025 and is considering continuing his education with a master’s degree in the same field. Additionally, Mr. Duff looks forward to becoming a stronger part of his new community in Baldwin County, Alabama.
