Brad D. Nelson, deputy director of contracting within the United States Air Force, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Military for dedication, achievements, and leadership in contract management.

With 20 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Nelson has excelled as deputy director of contracting within the United States Air Force. He began his military career in the United States Army, serving as a battery executive officer from 2003 to 2005. He maintained his involvement with same as a platoon leader in 2005, a battalion liaison officer from 2005 to 2006, and as an army reservist in Iraq from 2009 to 2010. As a member of the United States Air Force, he contributed as a deputy chief from 2019 to 2020, an operations and integration cell head from 2020 to 2021, deputy branch chief of aircrew performance from 2020 to 2021, deputy division chief of contracting of the presidential and executive airlift directorate from 2021 to 2023, and deputy director of contracting for the agile combat support directorate since 2023.

Concurrent to these posting, Dr. Nelson held a number of advanced executive positions at public corporations and governmental departments, including as a contracts specialist at Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and Army Contracting Command and the McLaughlin Research Corporation. He found additional success as a contracting officer for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs 2008 to 2013, the Pretrial Service Agency for the District of Columbia from 2015 to 2019, and the Federal Aviation Administration from 2015 to 2019.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Nelson pursued an education at Binghamton University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in politics, philosophy, and law in 2000. He continued his academic efforts at Webster University, graduating with a Master of Science in human resource management in 2004. Following these accomplishments, he obtained a Master of Business Administration from Warren National University in 2008. He concluded his studies at Capella University, completing a PhD in criminal justice in 2017. 

Dr. Nelson holds three certifications from the National Contract Management Association, including as a contract management associate, a federal contracts manager, and a professional contracts manager. His additional certifications are as a level III in the Acquisition Professional Development Program and a level I in the Program Management, Acquisition Professional Development Program of the United States Air Force.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Nelson has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He donates time to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, is a board member of Arm & Arm, and a volunteer, trustee, usher, head of security, and men’s director of Woodland Hills Baptist Church. He found success with his written work, “Pre-Deployment Guidebook from a Christian’s Perspective” in 2023.

In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Nelson remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was a member of the National Contract Management Association. In light of his impressive undertakings, he has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was presented with the Meritorious Service Medal, several Defense Service Medals and multiple Joint Service Commendation Medals.
