Title: Senior Chief Quartermaster
Company: United States Navy
Location: San Leandro, California, United States
Michael “Mickey” Ganitch, former senior chief quartermaster in the United States Navy, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Military for dedication, achievements, and leadership in naval navigation.
Prior to his tragic passing in May 2022, Mr. Ganitch cultivated a fulfilling career in military service, with several decades of collective experience to his credit. He honorably served in the United States Navy from 1940 to 1963. During the course of his service, he was notably on-site during the now-historic attack on Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, as well as the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll alongside his crew of the USS Pennsylvania. Mr. Ganitch would subsequently rise to the position of senior chief quartermaster, and in his retirement, he remained a steadfast figure within his field.
Mr. Ganitch maintained his presence in veterans’ affairs, regularly participating with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Mickey Ganitch Memorial Post 9601, the Fleet Reserve Association and the American Legion. Furthermore, he served as the state treasurer of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and was a member of the Orinda Masonic Lodge No. 122. Upon the re-naming of VFW Post 9601, the new chaplain presented his family with a challenge coin; one the front side of the coin, it contained his picture, his armed service record and the name of the post, while the back side of the coin featured the logo of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of The United States.
Mr. Ganitch was especially fond of working and speaking with students and fraternal groups on the importance of remembrance during his retirement. He was also thankful for the opportunities he received to meet with prominent individuals and government officials, including former President Donald Trump and Prince Harry. Mr. Ganitch is survived by his wife, Barbara; his four children, Bonnie, Janet, Karen and Joyce; and his 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
