James Six, Military Instructor at the U.S. Air Force, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Military for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Military Education.
Mr. Six has established a distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force, marked by more than two decades of dedicated service and progressive leadership. Since 2023, he has served as a military instructor at the Air Command and Staff College, Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, in Alabama. In this capacity, Mr. Six guides field grade officers and their equivalents in developing, employing and commanding air, space and cyberspace forces. His responsibilities include teaching and conducting seminars, preparing course materials, creating lesson plans, formulating questions to drive class discussion and delivering lectures. Mr. Six is also responsible for developing curriculum for air operations courses and contemporary warfighting.
Notably, Mr. Six serves as the course director for the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Leadership specialization, where he prepares officers to lead staff organizations in generating data science and artificial intelligence (AI) strategies across diverse mission sets. Among his most significant achievements was the creation of the data science course at the Air Command and Staff College in early 2023, a milestone he accomplished with the support of fellow faculty members.
Before his current role, Mr. Six was an instructor at the Squadron Officer School at Maxwell Air Force Base from 2022 to 2023. Between 2018 and 2021, he was a deputy commander with the U.S. Air Force. Concurrently, from 2017 to 2021, Mr. Six excelled as the chief of the operational training development team, where he led efforts to enhance training programs for aircrew members.
Among other titles, Mr. Six was the assistant director of operations for the EC-130H unit at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona. His earlier assignments included serving as a flight commander at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and as a project engineer at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma.
Mr. Six’s military journey began in April 2003 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army reserves and completed communications training at Fort Gordon in Georgia. After earning his commission as a distinguished graduate of Officer Training School in 2008, he attended the Civil Engineering Basic Course at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio before beginning his active-duty service as a civil engineer.
In 2011, Mr. Six transitioned into aviation by attending flight school at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida, where he earned his combat systems officer rating later that year. He subsequently undertook various roles within electronic warfare on the EC-130H aircraft over a decade-long period at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, culminating as evaluator mission crew commander with the 41st Electronic Combat Squadron.
Mr. Six earned a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering from Clemson University in 2006. He later acquired a Master of Arts in ancient and classical history from American Military University in 2015. In addition to these degrees, he holds a Master of Arts in operational design from the U.S. Air Force Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama since 2022. Further enhancing Mr. Six’s qualifications is a professional certificate in data science and analytics from Emeritus, obtained in 2024.
Beyond his education, Mr. Six has been an active member of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Association. He is also affiliated with the Association of Old Crows, an international nonprofit professional organization that focuses on electronic warfare, tactical information operations and similar disciplines.
Mr. Six’s expertise encompasses leadership in professional military education, command-level leadership, air operations strategy, contemporary warfighting concepts and data science integration within defense contexts. Throughout his career, he has become recognized for his ability to blend operational experience with instructional acumen. Mr. Six has notably accumulated more than 1,000 flight hours, including over 600 combat hours, across multiple aircraft such as the T-6, T-1 and EC-130H platforms. Additionally, his operational experience has included deployments totaling approximately 30 months in combat zones supporting Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, Inherent Resolve and Freedom’s Sentinel.
Dedicated to both military operations and education, Mr. Six has successfully shaped future leaders across air, space and cyberspace domains. His exemplary service has been recognized through several prestigious awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, an Air Medal, an Air Force Military Service Award from the Association of Old Crows, and an Air Force Electronic Warfare Annual Award from Air Combat Command.
Attributing his achievements not only to the encouragement and support of his family, but also to his passion for military instruction, which he finds deeply rewarding, Mr. Six aims to remain with the U.S. Air Force. He is eager to further develop AI components within military instruction, making them more accessible throughout the Air Command and Staff College. Moreover, Mr. Six aspires to become a course director for contemporary warfare studies.
