Dr. Theresa A. Ware-Asbury

Title: Commander (Retired)
Company: United States Navy
Location: El Paso, Texas, United States

Dr. Theresa A. Ware-Asbury, retired commander at the United States Navy, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Military for dedication, achievements, and leadership in counseling.

With over 20 years of experience to her credit, Dr. Ware-Asbury has excelled in the United States Navy in a number of positions and ranks, retiring as a commander and executive officer in the Navy ROTC Unit at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1994. She began her military career in 1972 as a human resource management consultant in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was active as an assistant department head of the Inpatient Drug and Alcohol Rehab Center in San Diego. She served as a counselor before transitioning to the role of director of the Counseling and Assistance Center, also in San Diego. She contributed as second in command executive officer at the Manpower Analysis Center and with the Transit Personnel Unit.

Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Ware-Asbury pursued an education and earned a Master of Arts in marriage, family, and child therapy in 1978. She continued her academic efforts and obtained a Master of Arts in counseling psychology in 1980. She concluded her studies at Clark Atlanta University, graduating with a Doctorate in Africana women’s studies.

In light of her impressive undertakings, Dr. Ware-Asbury has accrued several accolades throughout her career. She made history in 1972 when she became the 14th African-American woman commissioned as a naval officer and the first to join the Joint Chief of Staff in Washington, D.C. Her dissertation focused on the progress of black women officers compared to black male and white women officers, as all three groups enter the Navy around the same time.

Dr. Ware-Asbury’s most remarkable career achievement is her perseverance in a hostile work environment that has traditionally offered little professional support and where she encountered significant racism and sexism. Her greatest satisfaction is her granddaughter, who aspires to attend the United States Naval Academy and study aerospace engineering to become an astronaut. She seeks to impart her motivation, determination, and unwavering commitment to the Navy to her granddaughter.

In the immediate future, Dr. Ware-Asbury would like to be able to go to Antarctica to complete a visit to each of the seven continents. She would also like to participate in establishing an institution for women of color that would strive to help them survive and succeed in the corporate and military world.
