Anthony Bolante, U.S. Army Colonel & Pilot (Retired) at Washington Army National Guard, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Military for dedication, achievements, and leadership in aviation and photojournalism.
With more than 25 years of experience in editorial photography, sports photojournalism and adventure documentation, Mr. Bolante has excelled as a visual journalist and editor, at numerous international wire services, picture agencies and newspapers including Reuters News Pictures, Associated Press, ZUMA Press, Getty Images, Bloomberg News, Polaris, SIPA, Sygma, Gamma-Liaison, WireImage.com, Redbox Pictures, the Hawaii Newspaper Agency, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, the Bellevue (WA) Journal-American and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Since 2011, he has prospered as sole staff photographer at the Puget Sound Business Journal in Seattle.
Mr. Bolante has served his country for over three decades in the United States Army National Guard, where he attained the rank of colonel. As a CH-47D Chinook helicopter pilot, he flew multiple missions in Afghanistan, capturing images during his off hours that were featured as the cover story of the February 2007 Newsphotographer magazine of the National Press Photographer Association. He captured the NPPA 2010 Kenneth P. McLaughlin Award of Merit for his photography.
Among Mr. Bolante’s numerous photography assignments in recent years were covering the Vancouver Winter Olympics, the Amgen Tour of California pro-bicycle stage race, South-by-Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival, the Sasqautch Music Festival at The Gorge, the Seattle Mariners MLB season, the Seattle Storm WNBA 2010 championship, the Seattle Sounders MLS season, Seattle Seahawks NFL season and the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Championship in Hawaii.
After obtaining an Associate of Arts in liberal arts with the United States Army Officer Commission at New Mexico Military Institute in 1987 in Roswell, New Mexico and serving as an intern photojournalist in Kauai, Hawaii in 1989, Mr. Bolante trained as a pilot in the United States Army Helicopter Flight School in 1990 at Fort Rucker, Alabama and served as a student staff photojournalist with Ka Leo o Hawaii, the student newspaper at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, Hawaii from 1988 to 1991, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism the latter year. He provided superior service as an intern photojournalist with Reuters Pictures in Washington and with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin in 1991. Mr. Bolante later earned a Master of Military Arts and Sciences from U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 2005.
Mr. Bolante attributes his success to the upbringing he had as a Filipino American. Brought up in Hawaii, he was raised in a way to never forget to give back to America. During the Japanese occupation in the Philippines, his entire family immigrated to the United States, making him, his brother, and his cousins the first generation to be born in America. When they immigrated, they all enlisted in the military. Having retired from the Army National Guard with 30 years and one with a service recently, Mr. Bolante is grateful that he can really focus on one career for the first time in 30 years. In the coming years, his focus will be on photojournalism.
