Dr. Robert F. Birtcil, Jr., Admiral at United States Navy, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Military for dedication, achievements, and leadership in military dental practice.
After coursework in chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley from 1960 to 1962, Dr. Birtcil obtained a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of California, San Francisco in 1967. Upon his graduating, he was drafted into the United States Army, but thereupon signed for the Navy Early Commissioning program. Between his junior and senior year of dental school, Dr. Birtcil had attended the officer indoctrination course which was conducted for medical and dental students at the U.S. Naval Academy. He served two-tour, 21 combat operations in Vietnam with the Third Marine Division from 1967 to 1969. For his combat service, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with “V,” Purple Heart, two Meritorious Service Medals, Navy and Marine Corps Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon plus numerous campaign and service medals.
Dr. Birtcil served Navy Reserve Commanding Officer tours and excelled for four years as Head of the Medical Department Naval Special Warfare at Mare Island Naval Shipyard (MINSY) in California; as Staff Dental Officer with the Navy Reserve Readiness Command Region 20 for three years; and Assistant Chief for Logistics, Bureau of Medicine & Surgery in Washington from 1994 to 1995.
Dr. Birtcil, the only graduate in the history of the UCSF Campus to ever be promoted to one (1994), and then the two-star rank of Admiral (1998) from the reserve component of the United States Armed Forces, provided stellar service as Commander-in-Chief and Pacific Fleet Dental Officer from 1995 to 1996, Commander Navy Reserve Force Dental Officer and Deputy Chief of the Navy Dental Corps in Washington from 1996 to 2000. During his time in the Navy, he also maintained a private dental practice and was confirmed as a full professor at the University of California. Now retired, Dr. Birtcil attributes his success to his passion and dedication to work.
