Dean Markuson, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Foss and Swanson The People’s Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Military for dedication, achievements, and leadership in military professionalism and community service.

As a veteran of the United States Army, serving for 20 years from 1970 to 1990 with stateside assignments throughout the United States and overseas deployments in Vietnam, Korea and Germany, while attaining the rank of First Sergeant, Mr. Markuson appreciates the service of so many military personnel in his community and became a community service provider through his membership in many Veterans Service Organizations and has paid forward his talents and unselfish generous resources to many nonprofits, like Quilts of Valor, United Way of Hastings, Total Life Center, Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge, to include Quit Deeding, his building and land to RISEUP MN Hastings Recovery and many other organizations.

Mr. Markuson’s honors during his military service include five commendation ribbons, a Meritorious Service Medal, a Bronze Star Medal (BSM), six Army Good Conduct Medals (AGCM), a Professional Development Ribbon, a National Defense Service Medal, and numerous certificates. In 2019, Mr. Markuson founded the Foss and Swanson Center, named for two local soldiers who gave their lives in Vietnam. Mr. Markuson and the Center strives to provide “ALL” people, with an emphasis on service, support and recognition of veterans, with access to resources for any issue or problem that they may face, to meet their basic needs, and succeed in life The Center provides historical preservation featuring military artifacts, artwork and antiques and a library, as a gateway to knowledge and culture.

Upon his retirement from the Army, Mr. Markuson enrolled in Inver Grove Junior College (Now Inver Hills Community College), Minnesota, where he obtained an Associate of Science in business management in 1992. Prior to his entry, into the Armed Services, he took coursework at the University of North Dakota at Ellendale. Mr. Markuson later worked for the government of Dakota County and the State of Minnesota for nearly twelve years. In addition to his primary work, he served as the editor of the Veteran Services News Bulletin of Dakota County Veteran Services.

Mr. Markuson became involved in his profession because after spending 20 years in the Army as a First Sergeant and retiring from the Minnesota state government, he was looking for something to do. He went back to his roots as a Sergeant and wanted to do something to take care of the troops. The Foss and Swanson People’s Center, which he considers a career highlight, was born out of that vision. In the coming years, Mr. Markuson will continue contributing to the community or cause, that gives back to the community, by partnering with other groups, to ensure, the “Mission is Completed.”
