John M. “Mike” Holmes, Consultant and Retired Captain of the U.S. Navy, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Military for dedication, achievements, and leadership in military service.
Before embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Holmes earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from San Francisco State University. He subsequently completed a Master of Arts in international relations and comparative politics through Middlebury Institute of International Studies and a Master of Public Administration through Golden Gate University. During the late 1960s, Mr. Holmes studied Mandarin at the Defense Language Institute in Washington, D.C.
He graduated from Navy Officer Candidate School and was commissioned in the Navy in 1963. He served on a destroyer homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, before being sent to Vietnam to serve as an advisor to the South Vietnamese Navy. Following service on several other Navy ships he worked on the Navy Headquarters staff for about 7 years. He was Naval Attache to China, commanded a base in South Korea and lead the defense office in Hong Kong before retiring as a Captain.
Throughout his storied military career, Mr. Holmes was recognized on numerous occasions, earning a Legion of Merit Award, a Bronze Star with “V”, a Defense Meritorious Service Medal, a Meritorious Service Medal with a Gold Star and a Navy Commendation Medal. After the military, he received numerous Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship Awards, a Meritorious Service Medal through Sons of the American Revolution and a McCann Award for Community Service in 2014. He served on the Auburn city council for 12 years and continues his work to improve the community.
