Bearing a wealth of experience in operational medicine, Dr. Rivero leverages more than three decades of expertise toward his role as the chief medical officer of the Weed Army Community Hospital, a military health facility in Fort Irwin, California. An active member of the U.S. Army, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1990 and has since risen to the rank of a colonel. Best noted for his military leadership and exemplary performance as an aerospace physician, Dr. Rivero has held such roles as a general medical officer at the U.S. Army Health Clinic in Darmstadt, Germany, an emergency medical treatment physician for the 212th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in Bosnia-Herzegovina, a flight surgeon at Raymond W. Bliss Army Health Clinic in Fort Huachuca, Arizona, the assistant chief resident at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute and a surgeon on behalf of the U.S. Army Cadet Command in Fort Knox, Kentucky, among many other positions.
To commemorate his accomplishments, Dr. Rivero has received numerous awards over the course of his career. To wit, he was bestowed with such accolades as a Legion of Merit in 2019, an Order of Military Medical Merit Award, an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, an Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, several Global War on Terror medals, a Bronzer Star with one oak leaf cluster, and the Order of St. Michael bronze medal. Moreover, Dr. Rivero was recognized as the Aerospace Medicine Specialist of the Year by the Society of U.S. Army Flight Surgeons in 2009.
Dr. Rivero initially became involved in medicine out of a fondness for science and a compulsion to help his fellow human beings. Pursuing medical school through a military scholarship, he earned a Bachelor of Science in biology at Georgetown University in 1990, and later attended the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, where he received a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude in 1994. Dr. Rivero concluded his academic efforts at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where he received a Master of Public Health in 2005.
