Driven by a love for her profession, Catherine Lynn Cambern Brown has enjoyed an exciting career as a nurse. From the young age of four years old, Ms. Brown set her eyes on the nursing field. To pursue her goals, after graduating from Shoreline High School, class ’70, she enrolled at Eastern Washington State College, now known as Eastern Washington University, from 1970 to 1973. With this solid educational foundation, Ms. Brown joined the U. S. military which was one of the best things she ever did to herself. She launched her career as a Hospital Corpswave at the National Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland from 1974 to 1979. She was then transferred to the Naval Hospital in Rota, Spain for three and a half years, from 1979 to 1982, a position she considers amongst the highlights of her professional journey. In this role, Ms. Brown had various responsibilities, including suturing patients, and gained valuable firsthand experience in the field of nursing. The highlight of her naval career though was working as a corpswave at Bethesda Naval Hospital where she received a great deal of hands on experience in nursing. Then after serving in the U. S. Naval Reserves for 25 years, both in Pensacola, Fl. and Bremerton, Washington, Ms. Brown retired as a first class petty officer in 2008.

Prior to becoming a registered nurse, Ms. Brown lived in Pensacola, Florida and earned an Associate of Science degree in nursing from Jefferson Davis Jr. College in Brewton, Alabama in 1989. With more than thirty years of experience in nursing to her credit, Ms. Brown has become an authority in her industry, especially Medical-Surgical Nursing. After obtaining her nursing degree, she first worked as an registered nurse on the neurosurgery unit of West Florida Regional Medical Center, 1989 to 1995. To further her understanding of the medical field, she also became a certified Medical-Surgical nurse from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. While living in Pensacola, in addition to her primary professional career, she contributed her time and talents to a number of healthcare organizations. She was a volunteer lecturer at JDJC and was a presenter with Say No To Drugs with the Escambia County Elementary school system. Since moving to Seattle, she has been a member of the Puget Sound Oncology Nurses’ Association and has participated at the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason on Science Fridays. Ms. Brown was a prior member of the National Adrenal Diseases Foundation and a lifetime member of the Association of Military Surgeons of the U. S. In Seattle she first worked at Vencor Ventilator Hospital then has done home health with medically complicated patients through Alliance Nursing. Now Ms. Brown has plans to go back to school to a Biotech program leading to med research.

Apart from her career, Ms. Brown has volunteered in her community. While living in Florida, she was a fulltime Kindergarten volunteer at West Pensacola Elementary School, a Girl Scout co-leader of Troop 51, and aside from her nursing profession, she has worked with children, including tutoring them. She is also a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of the U. S. of America. In Florida she was also associated with the Young Astronauts and the Myrtle Grove Community Center. Since moving cross country to Seattle, she has been a volunteer with the Daughters of American Revolution, the Broadview Historical Society, a docent at Shoreline Historical Museum, and just recently became a member of Eastern Star.

In her free time, Ms. Brown enjoys genealogy and history. Ms. Brown was married to the late Van Eugene Brown 1976 and has one Daughter and four wonderful Grandchildren. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Ms. Brown moved to Richland, Washington to join her family. Currently, she does home health nursing with Avail Home Health and is starting college classes in fall 2022 at Columbia Basin Jr. College in the biotech field.
