Inspired by his father, who was a naval officer, Mr. Smith had always envisioned a career for himself in the armed forces. He loved to interview and talk with people, which stayed with him throughout his life in his multiple career endeavors. Mr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts in government and history from Connecticut College in 1980 and went on to receive a Master of Arts in journalism and public relations from Ohio State University in 1990. Shortly thereafter, in 1995, he graduated from the Naval War College with a concentration in national security and joint maritime operations. Recently, he received a Master of Arts in government from Regent University in 2016.
Mr. Smith enlisted in the United States Navy in 1981 and was a warfare officer and surface line officer until 1994. In 1995, he became a public affairs officer and remained in that position until his retirement in 2004. Since 1981, he has also been a broadcaster with LincInterviews. Since 2018, he has been a podcast host of LincInterviews with the National Press Club and a guest co-host on Freedom 1110 Radio WKQA-AM. Looking back, Mr. Smith recalls his most notable achievement was becoming an officer in the U.S. Navy, as well as qualifying as a surface warfare officer on the USS John F. Kennedy. Likewise, he enjoyed commanding and working with young sailors, as he believes there is nothing more rewarding than a shared service. Mr. Smith attributes his success to his parents who provided him and his siblings with a good education. As a testament to his success, he has received eight personal awards and a Meritorious Award. He was also inducted as a member of Kappa Tau Alpha, the Public Relations Society of America, Masons and Shriners.
