Phillip Roger Olson, RADM, Executive Director and Partner at Phoenix Group of Virginia, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Military for dedication, achievements, and leadership in military service.
After graduating from high school, Mr. Olson earned an NROTC scholarship to attend the University of California, Los Angeles in 1957. While there, the senior instructor of the NROTC unit suggested he apply for entrance into the Naval Academy. Excited at the opportunity, he earned a Bachelor in Naval Science from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1962. He then received a Master in Physics from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1968. Upon completion of his degree, Mr. Olson became certified in Navy Surface Nuclear Operations.
The highlights of Mr. Olson’s career were his command tours on USS Pharris (FF1094) from 1981 to 1982 and USS Mississippi (CGN-40) from 1983 to 1986. During this time, he worked with outstanding crews that confronted the Soviet Union during The Cold War years with the utmost professionalism. Mr. Olson joined the U.S. Navy in 1962. From 1978 to 1981, he was an instructor of the Ship Material Readiness Group in Idaho Falls. After his two command tours, he became a senior instructor of the ship Material Readiness Group in Newport, Rhode Island in 1986, remaining until 1987. He then became deputy director of operations of the Joint Staff from 1987 to 1988. The following year, Mr. Olson was the deputy director of strategy and policy for the Joint Staff. In 1989, he was the commander of Logistics Group Two for the U.S. Navy for a year. He then became the commander of Cruiser-Destroyer Group One for the U.S. Navy from 1990 to 1992. Later, from 1992 until his retirement in 1996, Mr. Olson was the president of Board Inspection & Survey with the U.S. Navy.
Since 2013, Mr. Olson has served as chairman of the Chartway Federal Credit Union for the Credit Union Support Organization and, since 2018, he has served as chairman of the Military Economic Development Advisory Commission. He also served on the BMT Designers and Planners Board of Directors from 2008 to 2018. He now consults on Navy Logistics Support and Operational Engineering and is the executive director and partner of The Phoenix Group of Virginia. As a testament to his success, Mr. Olson received a Decorated Distinguished Service Medal. He is also listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America.
