Colonel Darryl W. Hensley, Los Angeles Executive Director of JROTC at Los Angeles Unified School District, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Military for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the U.S. Army.
Colonel Hensley became involved in his military profession by the influence of his father, who served in the U.S. Air Force during the Cold War. His father served four years, learned how to be a radar technician and honed in on those skills to land a job with General Electric. Colonel Hensley joined the U.S. Army in 1984, remaining until he retired in 2011. Notably, he served in Iraq in 2009 and 2010, which he calls most notable achievement. Having served with General Raymond Odierno, he had the opportunity to meet various political figures including former Vice President Joe Biden and Senators Lindsey Graham, John McCain and Joseph Lieberman. He is also proud of the fact that he never lost a man in combat.
Since 2019, Colonel Hensley has been the Los Angeles executive director of the JROTC with the Los Angeles Unified School District. Earlier, from 2011 to 2019, he taught Army JROTC at the Wiesbaden American High School in Germany. As a testament to his success, Colonel Hensley received a Bronze Star Medal for service in Afghanistan in 2003, a Golden Key, Defense Meritorious Service Medal and a Civilian Service Achievement Medal. He has also been inducted as a member of various esteemed organizations, including being a life member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Association of the United States Army, to name a few. Colonel Hensley earned a Master of Arts in human relations from the University of Oklahoma in 2018. Looking ahead, he hopes to receive a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Southern California in the near future.
